Unique Health Center at Tri-C Provides Low Cost Care

Cuyahoga Community College offers low-cost preventative health care to Cleveland residents, while providing hands-on experience to students studying occupational therapy, physical therapy, and dietetic technology.  They work under the direction of licensed professionals.
Cindy Rakow is coordinator of the Community Health, Wellness and Preventative Care Center, which has limited hours, and is open only when school is in session.  She explains the numerous services provided in this interview.

Associate Dean Offers Students International Flavor

Klaus Tenbergen, associate dean of the Hospitality Management program at Cuyahoga Community College, brings a global culinary perspective to Tri-C.  A native of Germany, Klaus began is career there, owned and operated a bakery in South Africa, and ran the culinary program at California State University, Fresno before coming to Cleveland. 

Tenbergen was generous with his time for this interview, explaining how students learn culinary arts and entrepreneurship, discussing a recent “culinary mission” to France to start a student exchange program, and explaining why some chefs gravitate toward baking, others cooking.

Baking is Tenbergen's specialty, and he is enthused about the trend toward urban gardening in Cleveland.

Tri-C To Ask for Tax Hike To Keep Tuition Affordable

Dr. Alex Johnson celebrates his first anniversary as President of Cuyahoga Community College on July 8, 2014.  In the next 5 months, he will help guide the campaign to pass a renewal levy and an additional tax. He explains how the levy will help keep tuition at Tri-C affordable.  Dr. Johnson also discusses this weekend's JazzFest, featuring artists such as Ernie Krivda, Trombone Shorty and Dave Koz.

From Cleveland To Cornell: The Grandma Graduate

Susan Porter is about to graduate from Cornell University.  She is a non-traditional student, entering college for the first time while in her 50's.  

Susan ran Town Fryer, a restaurant near downtown Cleveland prior to enrolling in three online classes at 

Tri-C.  She explains how Cornell pursued her  to enroll there, and how her story wound up in a chapter of Marlo Thomas' book It Ain't Over... Till It's Over: Reinventing Your Life - and Realizing Your Dreams - Anytime, at Any Age.

Baby Boomers Retrain for Encore Careers At Tri-C

Cuyahoga Community College has been awarded a grant to help retrain workers 50 years of age and older.
The Plus 50 Encore Completion Program is a national effort to help baby boomers find jobs in health care, education and social services.

Ronna McNair, Assistant Dean of Student Learning and Career Development at Tri-C explains that the goal is to provide a seamless support system through the Encore program, which is sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges.

Tr-C Helps Veterans Learn To Heal, and Heal to Learn

Cuyahoga Community College has been providing special help to veterans since 1963, when the school opened in the old Crile VA Hospital in Parma, providing education and career help to those who have served our country.  And with the draw-down of troops from Afghanistan expected to swell the number of veterans seeking employment, Tri-C has embarked on a new Veteran's Initiative.  Rick DeChant, Executive Director of Veterans Services and Programs for Cuyahoga Community College explains past efforts to help veterans, and what the school is doing for current heroes as they end their service to our country.
